Sometimes, a standard futon size doesn’t quite fit your space or sleeping style. Whether you have a unique bed frame, a built-in sleeping nook, a boat, camper van or simply prefer a specific dimension, we’re happy to create a custom futon just for you.

Here’s how to get started and what to keep in mind when ordering.

Measure your space

Begin by measuring the exact dimensions of the area where your futon will be used. If you plan to place it on a bed frame, recessed area, or within defined boundaries, accuracy becomes especially important. We recommend allowing a small amount of tolerance, as our futons are made from natural materials that can gently stretch or compress by approximately 2–4 cm.

If you’re unsure what size would be most comfortable for your space or body, you can experiment by folding a large sheet or blanket to your intended dimensions and lying on it. This simple exercise gives you a clear sense of proportion and fit, before committing to a custom piece.

Choose the right base

Your futon will perform best when used on tatami mats or another breathable, flat surface. Tatami encourages air circulation, supports moisture balance, and enhances comfort. This is all key to a healthy futon’s lifespan.

While we don’t currently offer tatami, many customers can find suitable options online in their own countries.

Understanding the craftsmanship behind custom futons

A custom futon is more than just a size adjustment, it’s a carefully tailored piece of craftsmanship. Traditional shikibuton are made using specific cotton thickness ratios that correspond to Japan’s standard width measurements.

Our cotton is woven on a vintage 1940s machine, which has been lovingly maintained and precisely calibrated for these traditional dimensions. Creating a custom width requires recalibrating and resetting this machinery; a delicate, time-intensive process handled by our experienced futon family.

This is why custom futons carry a higher price. Each one represents not only your individual specifications but also a unique moment of attention and care in the making process.

Requesting your custom size

Once you’ve measured your space and decided on your preferred dimensions, simply contact us with the following information:

• Desired length and width (in cm) – it will be calculated to bring it up to 12cm thick but the thickness can also be customised if you are above average body weight/height.
• Which items do you want customised? Shikibuton? Kakebuton? Both? Zabuton? Don’t forget about protective covers!
• How and where you’ll be using the futon (e.g. on a bed frame, tatami, or floor) in case we need to adjust dimensions 
• Any questions or guidance you’d like from us
• Shipping address

We’ll review your request, calculate the price for production – which includes shipping – and provide a quote and timeline for your handmade futon. If you don’t hear back from us, check your junk/spam folder.
