We get a LOT of questions about our cotton filling. Our organic cotton is sourced from India and we have a GOTS (Global Organic Textile standard) certificate. Our natural cotton is from Mexico, it is Grade A quality. All raw cotton is 100% chemical and pesticide free.

All cotton is processed in our own carding machines. We use only heat to sterilise any raw cotton that we receive. It is then combed into sheets which become the layers inside your shikibuton, kakebuton and zabuton.

When choosing organic cotton filling, it is 100% organic cotton filling only.

It is the same procedure for processing our natural cotton, however, we add approximately 10% of a man made cotton blend to the natural cotton only for our shikibuton. With our experience, we find this added man made cotton helps the natural cotton fibres to breathe more easily and sheds moisture more efficiently. It helps to keep the cotton healthier and prevents matting. Our natural cotton has more springy benefits with this blend included.

The individual milled cotton sheets can be best explained like this:

When you buy a travel pack of tissues the packet is firm yet has some squish to it. Together, these tissues are stronger and can give support to an object. When you open it and take out one tissue, it is more fine and delicate than the whole pack. A single tissue alone would not be able to support much. But together, they can achieve great things. The sum is greater than the parts.

The individual sheets of our organic cotton are more dense and firmer than our natural cotton. This is because there is less processing involved and no man made “cotton” weaved in. Over time all cotton fibres condense and compact, however, that is when they become stronger and more supportive.

Our organic cotton is the best choice for customers who suffer from asthma or other breathing related problems and those with severe skin allergies / sensitivities. It can also be a good option for those who like a firmer sleep support. Also, anyone who is more environmentally conscious.  

All of our fabric patterns and plains (Kawa green, Koi Indigo, Charcoal, etc.) are high thread count premium quality 100% cotton. Our plain white fabric is unbleached.

Our protective covers are also 100% cotton, however, they are bleached.
